What if a word you don't know comes up?

How to answer in Japan

★ Do not guess. Ask them to repeat it. Answering vaguely when you did not understand is what gets people rejected — the interviewer reads it as poor comprehension, or as not being straight with them. Asking again is normal and safe.

⭕️ A good answer

Sorry, could you say that again? / Could you say it more slowly, please?

❌ Not enough

“Yes, I understand.” — when you did not. This is the single most common way people lose the interview. Your next answer will not match the question, and the interviewer will notice.
