Seikatsu no Nihongo

Most of the questions are the same as anywhere. A few are not, and the way you answer is different.

The questions people are really asked in interviews in Japan — for a job, and before you leave home — with the answers explained in your language. The Japanese is always shown, so you can learn the exact words to say.

Start with these five

If you only have time for a few, learn these. They come up in almost every interview, whatever the job.

When you don't know how to answer

The hardest moments are not the questions you can answer. This is where most people lose the interview — and where the advice you were given at home may work against you.

Family, money, religion

Japanese employers ask things that would be strange in your country — about your family, and sometimes about religion. Japan’s guidance on fair hiring tells employers not to ask about a family’s job, income or property, or about religion, and questions about family are the largest part of the improper questions reported to Hello Work. People are asked them anyway, especially in Specified Skilled Worker and pre-departure interviews. Here is how people answer each one.

Sorted by how many places I found the question being asked. More places means you are more likely to be asked it. (Official pages are listed as backing, and are not counted here.)

A question, a request, or something you wish were here? Tell me.

Write in your own language. I never ask for your email. If enough people ask for the same thing, I make it — so requests count. If something here reads strangely in your language, that is worth telling me too. Nothing is shown publicly unless you tick the box below — and even then, I read it first before anything appears.
