むかしむかし、あるくにに、きれいなふくが大すきなおうさまがいました。
Long, long ago, in a certain country, there was a king who loved beautiful clothes.
おうさまは、まいにち、あたらしいふくにきがえていました。
Every day, the king changed into new clothes.
ある日、二人の男が、じぶんたちのことを、したてやだと言って、おしろにやってきました。
One day, two men came to the castle, saying they were tailors.
「わたしたちは、せかいでいちばんうつくしいふくをつくります。」
"We will make the most beautiful clothes in the world."
「このふくは、ばかな人には、見えないふくです。」
"These are clothes that a foolish person cannot see."
おうさまは、それを聞いて、大よろこびしました。
Hearing this, the king was overjoyed.
「そのふくがあれば、だれがばかか、すぐわかるな。」
"With those clothes, I'll know right away who is foolish."
おうさまは、二人に、たくさんのお金をわたしました。
The king gave the two men a lot of money.
二人は、へやにこもって、ふくをつくるまねをしました。
The two shut themselves in a room and pretended to make the clothes.
でも、じつは、いとも、ぬのも、なにもつかっていませんでした。
But in fact, they used no thread, no cloth, nothing at all.
すうじつごに、おうさまは、だいじんをへやへおくりました。
A few days later, the king sent a minister to the room.
だいじんは、へやを見て、びっくりしました。
The minister looked at the room and was shocked.
そこには、なにもなかったからです。
Because there was nothing there.
でも、だいじんは、こわくて、こう言いました。
But the minister, afraid, said this:
「なんてうつくしいふくでしょう。」
"What beautiful clothes these are."
おうさまも、へやへ行って、ふくを見ました。
The king too went to the room and looked at the clothes.
おうさまにも、なにも見えませんでした。
The king, too, could see nothing.
でも、おうさまも、こわくて、こう言いました。
But the king, too, afraid, said this:
「すばらしい。
"Wonderful.
これをきて、まちを歩こう。」
I'll wear this and walk through the town."
おうさまは、見えないふくをきて、まちへ出かけました。
The king put on the invisible clothes and went out to the town.
まちの人たちは、みんな、なにも見えませんでした。
The people of the town, all of them, could see nothing.
でも、みんな、こわくて、こう言いました。
But everyone, afraid, said this:
「なんてうつくしいふくでしょう。」
"What beautiful clothes these are."
すると、一人のちいさな子どもが、大きな声で言いました。
Then, one small child said in a loud voice,
「おうさまは、なにもきていないよ。」
"The king isn't wearing anything!"
まちの人たちは、それを聞いて、みんなわらいました。
Hearing this, the people of the town all laughed.
おうさまは、はずかしくなりましたが、さいごまで、まちを歩きつづけました。
The king felt embarrassed, but kept walking through the town until the end.
