むかしむかし、あるところに、子どものいないおじいさんとおばあさんがいました。
Long, long ago, in a certain place, there lived an old man and an old woman who had no children.
「どうか、子どもをさずけてください。
"Please, grant us a child.
小さくてもいいです。」
Even a tiny one is fine."
二人は、かみさまに、いのりました。
The two of them prayed to the gods.
すると、小さな小さな男の子が生まれました。
Then, a very, very small baby boy was born.
体は、ゆびくらいの大きさでした。
His body was about the size of a finger.
二人は、その子を「一寸法師」となづけました。
The two of them named him "Issun-boshi."
一寸法師は、大きくなりませんでしたが、とても元気で、強い心を持っていました。
Issun-boshi never grew bigger, but he was very energetic and had a strong spirit.
ある日、一寸法師は、言いました。
One day, Issun-boshi said,
「みやこへ行って、りっぱな人になりたいです。」
"I want to go to the capital and become a fine person."
おじいさんとおばあさんは、はりを一本、一寸法師にわたしました。
The old man and old woman gave Issun-boshi a single needle.
一寸法師は、おわんの船に乗って、はしでこぎながら、川をくだっていきました。
Issun-boshi rode in a bowl-boat, rowing with a chopstick, and went down the river.
みやこにつくと、一寸法師は、おおきなおやしきをたずねました。
When he reached the capital, Issun-boshi visited a great mansion.
そこでは、やさしいおひめさまが、くらしていました。
There, a kind princess lived.
一寸法師は、おひめさまのおともをすることになりました。
Issun-boshi came to serve as the princess's attendant.
ある日、一寸法師は、おひめさまといっしょに、お寺へでかけました。
One day, Issun-boshi went out to a temple together with the princess.
とちゅう、大きなおにが出てきて、おひめさまをさらおうとしました。
On the way, a big ogre appeared and tried to carry off the princess.
一寸法師は、はりの刀をぬいて、おにとたたかいました。
Issun-boshi drew his needle sword and fought the ogre.
おには、一寸法師を、ぱくりと食べてしまいました。
The ogre gobbled Issun-boshi right up.
でも、一寸法師は、おにのおなかの中を、はりでちくちくとつつきました。
But Issun-boshi poked and jabbed inside the ogre's belly with his needle.
おには、いたくなって、一寸法師をはき出しました。
The ogre, in pain, spat Issun-boshi back out.
そして、「まいった、まいった。」と言って、にげていきました。
Then, saying "I give up, I give up," it ran away.
おにがおとしていったのは、うちでの小づちでした。
What the ogre left behind was a magic mallet.
おひめさまは、その小づちをふって、言いました。
The princess waved the mallet and said,
「一寸法師、大きくなあれ。」
"Issun-boshi, grow big!"
すると、一寸法師は、みるみる大きくなり、りっぱな若者になりました。
Then, Issun-boshi grew bigger right before her eyes, becoming a fine young man.
一寸法師とおひめさまは、けっこんして、しあわせにくらしました。
Issun-boshi and the princess got married and lived happily.
