昔々、海のそばに、浦島太郎という、若い漁師がいました。
Long ago, by the sea, there was a young fisherman named Urashima Taro.
ある日、太郎は海べを歩いていました。
One day, Taro was walking on the beach.
子どもたちが、小さな亀をいじめていました。
Some children were bullying a small turtle.
太郎は、子どもたちに言いました。
Taro said to the children,
「亀さん、かわいそうに。
"Poor turtle.
いじめては、だめだよ。」
You mustn't bully it."
太郎は、亀を助けました。
Taro saved the turtle.
太郎は、亀を海に返しました。
Taro returned the turtle to the sea.
次の日、太郎は海で魚を釣っていました。
The next day, Taro was fishing in the sea.
大きな亀が来ました。
A big turtle came.
亀は、太郎に言いました。
The turtle said to Taro,
「太郎さん、昨日は、ありがとうございました。
"Taro, thank you for yesterday.
お礼に、竜宮城へ、連れていきます。」
As thanks, I will take you to the Dragon Palace."
太郎は、亀の背中に乗りました。
Taro rode on the turtle's back.
太郎は、海の中へ入っていきました。
Taro went into the sea.
海の中には、美しい竜宮城がありました。
In the sea, there was a beautiful Dragon Palace.
お城では、乙姫さまが、太郎を迎えました。
At the palace, Princess Otohime welcomed Taro.
「太郎さん、ようこそ。
"Welcome, Taro.
ゆっくりしていってください。」
Please make yourself at home."
太郎は、おいしいごちそうを食べました。
Taro ate delicious food.
太郎は、美しい踊りを見ました。
Taro watched a beautiful dance.
楽しい時間を過ごしました。
He spent a fun time.
楽しい日々は、はやく過ぎていきました。
The happy days passed by quickly.
ある日、太郎は、村のことを思い出しました。
One day, Taro remembered his village.

乙姫さまは、かなしそうな顔をしました。
Princess Otohime looked sad.
「それでは、これを持っていってください。
"Then, please take this with you.
でも、絶対に、開けないでくださいね。」

乙姫さまは、太郎に、小さな玉手箱を渡しました。
Princess Otohime gave Taro a small treasure box.
太郎は、また亀の背中に乗りました。
Taro rode on the turtle's back again.
太郎は、海の上に帰りました。
Taro returned to the surface of the sea.
でも、村は、変わっていました。
But the village had changed.
太郎の家も、家族も、どこにもありませんでした。
Taro's house and his family were nowhere to be found.
「おかしいな。
"That's strange.
ここは、僕の村じゃないのかな。」
Isn't this my village?"
太郎は、村の人に聞きました。
Taro asked a villager.
「浦島太郎という人を、知りませんか。」
"Do you know a person named Urashima Taro?"
村の人は、言いました。
The villager said,
「浦島太郎ですか。
"Urashima Taro?
それは、三百年前の、昔話ですよ。」
That's a story from three hundred years ago."
太郎は、びっくりしました。
Taro was surprised.
太郎は、何も分かりませんでした。
Taro did not understand anything.
太郎は、玉手箱のことを思い出しました。
Taro remembered the treasure box.
「この箱を開ければ、何か分かるかもしれない。」
"If I open this box, maybe I will understand something."
太郎は、乙姫さまとの約束を忘れました。
Taro forgot his promise to Princess Otohime.
太郎は、玉手箱を開けました。
Taro opened the treasure box.
箱から、白い煙が出てきました。
White smoke came out of the box.
太郎は、すぐに、おじいさんになりました。
Taro instantly became an old man.
