むかしむかし、あるところに、やさしいおじいさんとおばあさんが、犬といっしょにすんでいました。
Long, long ago, in a certain place, there lived a kind old man and old woman together with a dog.
犬の名前は、シロといいました。
The dog's name was Shiro.
ある日、シロが、庭で「ここほれ、わんわん。」と鳴きました。
One day, Shiro barked in the yard, "Dig here, woof woof."
おじいさんが、そこをほってみると、たくさんの金貨が出てきました。

After returning home, Shiro became sick.

And then, he passed away.
おじいさんとおばあさんは、かなしんで、シロを庭にうめました。
The old man and old woman, grieving, buried Shiro in the yard.
すると、そこから、大きな木が、あっというまに、そだちました。
Then, from that spot, a big tree grew in the blink of an eye.
ある日、木の下から、ひとにぎりの灰が、風にとばされてきました。
One day, a handful of ash blew over from under the tree.
おじいさんは、その灰を、かれた木にまいてみました。
The old man tried scattering the ash on a withered tree.
すると、かれた木に、きれいな花が、パッとさきました。
Then, beautiful flowers suddenly bloomed on the withered tree.
ちょうどそこに、おとのさまが、通りかかりました。
Just then, a lord happened to pass by.
「これはすばらしい。
"This is wonderful.
ほうびをつかわそう。」
I shall give you a reward."
おとのさまは、おじいさんに、たくさんのほうびをくれました。
The lord gave the old man a great many rewards.
それを見た、いじわるなおじいさんは、自分もやってみようと思いました。
Seeing this, the mean old man thought he would try it too.
いじわるなおじいさんは、灰をあつめて、おとのさまを待ちました。
The mean old man gathered ash and waited for the lord.
おとのさまが通ると、木に向かって、灰をまきました。
When the lord passed by, he threw the ash at the tree.
でも、風がふいて、灰は、おとのさまの顔にかかってしまいました。
But the wind blew, and the ash landed on the lord's face.
おとのさまは、おこって、いじわるなおじいさんをおいはらいました。
The lord got angry and chased the mean old man away.
やさしいおじいさんとおばあさんは、その後も、しあわせにくらしました。
The kind old man and old woman lived happily ever after.
